Day 4 of 40 – Sunday, July 17, 2022
WHAT’S HAPPENING
Week 1 ends with a 10-race card. Saturday’s program was sensational, with handle eclipsing $37 million with over $2.7 million bet into the Pick 6 with a massive carryover.
THE FEATURES
The Quick Call is the feature on the card. All eyes in it are on Big Invasion, who has won multiple stakes already in his 3YO season and now makes his Spa debut. He is a perfect fit for jockey Joel Rosario, who is among the most skilled turf sprint riders around. Trainer Larry Rivelli has two entered, Nobals and One Timer, but the latter is also entered today at Monmouth.
WHO’S HOT?
Rumors of Chad Brown’s demise were greatly exaggerated. All kidding aside, he had a huge Saturday, winning 4 races including a superfecta sweep in the Diana. Trainer Brad Cox picked up yet another win with Mo Strike taking the Sanford. On the jockey side, Irad Ortiz, Jr. has asserted his dominance on this colony. Joel Rosario has run his record to 4-17 at the young meet as well.
WHO’S NOT?
Favorites are just 8-31 at the meet so far. This has everything to do with the competitive nature of the racing. This percentage will certainly rise as time goes by, but it’s time for us to take advantage and shop for value.
BABY TALK
The opener is another NY bred MSW event, and the runner-up behind Sanford 3rd place finisher Andiamo a Firenze will be a big favorite. That runner is #8 MIRACLE MIKE, who was 5-1 on debut before checking in a distance second behind the runaway winner. He is expected to improve enough to win this thing. The pedigrees on his rivals are modest, through the dam of #4 LIGHT MAN, So N So, was a very strong 2YO sprinter. The dam of #7 CONMAN is A 5x winner and progeny of Constitution hit at a 20% clip on debut as 2YOs.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Race 5 #10 ATHENRY – I’m never going to give you a favorite in this category, so give me some slack on being 0-3! This son of Normandy Invasion is 4-1 on the morning line and should get a great pace stalking trip in a turf sprint that lacks a great deal of pace. He has elevated his game as a 4YO and now makes the third start of his form cycle. That’s often a time when horses make their biggest forward moves.
