Day 3 of 40 –Saturday, July 16, 2022
WHAT’S HAPPENING
The first Grade I of the meet, the Diana, will take place this afternoon. All eyes, though, are on the Pick 6, which has an astronomical carryover of $532,907.
THE FEATURES
There are two stakes on this card, the aforementioned Diana, as well as the Sanford. The former pits 4 Chad Brown trainees while the latter has a competitive field of 12 going postward.
WHO’S HOT?
Brad Cox picked up two wins on Friday and Mike Maker, Jeremiah Englehart and Christophe Clement won races for the 2nd straight day.
WHO’S NOT?
Among jockeys, Tyler Gaffalione (0-11), Dylan Davis (0-11) and Flavien Prat are the most high profile riders without wins at the meet. Chad Brown now has 3 beaten favorites at the meet and Todd Pletcher has two.
BABY TALK
The lone 2YO race of the day is the Sanford. The favorite will be Forte, who was a tremendously impressive debut winner at Belmont at odds of 1-5. He will likely get better with distance and experience. Great Navigator is my pick and his Monmouth debut should not be overlooked. He showed the ability to rate comfortably and is another bred to go long. You’re going to get an appealing price here to boot.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Race 3 - #6 SARAH’S SPLENDOR - This second time starter ran into a stablemate on debut and basically lost all chance with a clumsy beginning. There was no pace on in that race and she still put in a brief far turn bid before flattening out.
