The Tampa Bay Derby is the focus of the Derby trail tomorrow with a strong field lining up. We have a YouTube video covering the whole field with Mike Pribozie & Eric DeCoster, and I will have an ITM Plus show with Rich Averill going over the rest of the card that’s filled with major stakes races. Welcome to our special interview with trainer Michael McCarthy, whose 3-year-old colt Journalism has rocketed into the spotlight as a leading Kentucky Derby contender. This Curlin colt turned heads with his dynamic victory in the Grade 2 San Felipe at Santa Anita, stopping the clock in 1:42.24 at 1 1/16 miles and earning a 108 Beyer Speed Figure—one of the highest for any sophomore this year. Journalism’s surge down the stretch to catch favored Barnes showed he can close powerfully, hinting that he’ll relish longer distances such as the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 5 and, ultimately, the “Run for the Roses” at Churchill Downs on May 3.
PTF sits down with NBC Sports racing analysts Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey to discuss this past weekend's Saudi Cup. Randy was quite critical of the ride of James Macdonald following the race on Twitter, so he has an opportunity to defend his position here.
