Virginia Derby Day Previews & More!
While I’m sure quite a few of you are busy with the NHC this weekend, I hope you still have time to catch all the great content across the ITM network.
With my Cheltenham travels this week Nick Tammaro and JK handled the bulk of the Players’ Podcast from Santa Anita and Gulfstream. Mike Pribozie also hops in to talk with Drew Coatney about the current twinspires.com tournaments, as well as some Virginia Derby day talk. The Virginia Derby card discussion is furthered in a pair of YouTube videos, one covering the race itself and the other going over the Late Pick Five sequence.
Some of the biggest racing news of the past week was the announcement that Trevor Denman is retiring from race calling. JK was fortunate enough to chat with him in a wonderful new episode of JK + 1.
Finally, I’d be remiss to not mention our good friend Matt Miller, author of A Bettor Way of Thinking, receiving some incredible publicity for his book on X this morning. Check it out!

Road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby – The Grade 3 Virginia Derby – By Eric Solomon
With Churchill Downs taking ownership of Colonial Downs, they’ve created the opportunity to add a new Derby Prep race. The Grade 3 Virginia Derby was one of the signature races of the summer meet at Colonial, but this year, they moved it to March and to the dirt, highlighting a three day mini-meet, with all of the races being carded on their 1 ¼ oval dirt course. This race will be run at 1 ⅛ miles, which is a one turn race here. 10 horses that last raced at six different tracks compromise this eclectic field. This race is scheduled to go off at 5:10 (EDT).
